Peter, Bjorn & John – Young Folks

August 19, 2006

Who are Peter, Bjorn and John?  I’ve no idea and quite frankly I don’t care, because this is a great little song accompanied by a video which reminds me of Tin Tin.

Opening with a whistled tune that you’ll not be able to get out of your head for the rest of the day, the song is made up an almost spoken vocal, male versus female verses with joint chorus, laid over what at first seems like a standard dance beat, however, if you listen carefully you can pick out the different percussion instruments and bass line.

The video is currently available to watch on the NME Media Player

Have a listen and let me know what you think.

The View – Wasted Little DJs

August 10, 2006

The View crashed onto the scene when they accosted Pete Docherty before a Babyshambles gig in Dundee and hours later found themselves on stage opening for him.  This relationship developed, and in a “no publicity is bad publicity” sort of way it was the bands drummer who was caught with Pete in a stolen car earlier this year.

This week sees their first official release – Wasted Little DJs – a tribute to the Dundee disc spinners by the same name.  It’s a 4-minute song of perfect proportions, great lyrics (“They told me if I write this song for them.  That they would cut my hair for free”) and a tune that will spill onto the street outside your local indie haunt at closing time.

Having listened to this track you should be left wanting more, if so, check out their MySpace page to keep you going until they hit your area on tour, which I’m sure they will at some point given the extensive list of dates they’ve already announced.  See theviewareonfire.com LIVE section for details.

“The View, The View, The View are on fire”…Indeed!!

Arctic Monkeys – Leave Before The Lights Come On

August 6, 2006

Just seen the video for the next Arctic Monkeys single and it’s pretty good.  Another vid where the boys are nowhere to be seen, but which follows a story.  Some wife looks like shes about to jump off a building, some guy stops her, wife decides she’s in love with guy and stalks him on his way home.  Y’know that old chestnut.

I have heard the song quite a few times already and it’s lacking something compared to what has gone before – it just seems a bit flat.  They’ve always got away with it in the past because songs have had either one or both of the following:  mega witty lyrcs and/or a foot-tappingly catchy tune.  It has grown on me a bit though, the first time I heard it I thought it was shit.  Hope this is not the begining of a slide because they have been a refreshing lift since they arrived on the scene.
